Dopo i due casi PW Pratt&Whitney la FAA emana una ulteriore EAD

Il contesto è successivo al Boeing 747-400 cargo, con un motore Pratt&Whitney 4056 perde pezzi dopo il decollo e del Boeing 777-200 e dell'esplosione del propulsore Pratt & Whitney PW 4000, dopo il decollo da Denver-USA lo scorso sabato 20 Febbraio 2021.

Alla iniziale Emergency Directive della FAA, che riguardava i propulsori Pratt & Whitney PW 4000, disponendo ispezioni dettagliate. Attivando ispezioni dettagliate per PW 4000 installati sulla flotta Boeing 777-200. Una flotta di 128 velivoli.

La flotta interessata dall'ulteriore EAD FAA, dopo due giorni, ha esteso l'Emergency Airworthiness Directive EAD-2021-05-51 alla seguenti tipologia di propulsori:

“Feb 23rd 2021 the FAA released their Emergency Airworthiness Directive EAD-2021-05-51 for:

all PW4074, PW4074D, PW4077, PW4077D, PW4084D, PW4090, and PW4090-3 model turbofan engines.

The FAA argues: "This emergency AD was prompted by the in-flight failure of a 1st-stage low-pressure compressor (LPC) blade on a PW4077 model turbofan engine resulting in an engine fire during flight. This condition, if not addressed, could result in 1st-stage LPC blade release, damage to the engine, and damage to the airplane." The EAD requires operators to "Before further flight, perform a thermal acoustic image (TAI) inspection of the 1st-stage LPC blades for cracks using a method approved by the FAA." If any 1st-stage LPC blade fails the inspection, remove the blade from service and replace with a part eligible for installation before further flight”.
